CERTIFICATE III IN INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT

This qualification reflects the role of individuals in the community, home or residential care setting who work under supervision and delegation as a part of a multi-disciplinary team, following an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason.

These individuals take responsibility for their own outputs within the scope of their job role and delegation. Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.

The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.

General Requirements (All Students)

Academic Prerequisites:

  • Satisfactory completion of the equivalent of Australian Year 11 or higher
  • Physical attributes suitable for the ageing support industry (manual handling capacity)
  • Commitment to 4 hours per week self-directed learning

Pre-Enrolment Assessments:

  • Genuine Student Test/Pre-Training Review: Identifying training needs, previous experience, and course relevance
  • Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND) Assessment: Ensuring adequate foundation skills for AQF Level 3

Domestic Students

Academic Requirements:

  • Satisfactory completion of the equivalent of Australian Year 11 or higher
  • Demonstrated literacy and numeracy skills appropriate for AQF Level 3
  • Physical capability for ageing support work, including manual handling

Work Placement Requirements (before commencement):

  • Proof of up-to-date immunisation
  • Satisfactory National Police Clearance/Australian Federal Police Clearance Certificate (AFP)/NCC
  • Working with Children Check

Additional Requirements:

Course Duration: Full-time: Over a period of 36 weeks
  • 26 weeks of delivery is inclusive of 3 weeks of Work Placement (120 hours) and 3 weeks of holiday breaks. The Work Placement is allocated as 40 hours per week.
  • Supervised Classroom Sessions of 20 hours per week on campus.
  • Work Placement hours totalling 120 hours.
  • Additional Training Support hours, including any learning assistance provided to students after the classroom sessions or on additional request by learners outside of supervised classroom session hours, either via face-to-face or phone, Skype, or email to support learners to undertake their individual self-learning activities and assessments outside of classroom hours.
  • Completion of Individual Learning and Reflection/Self-Paced learning hours are not monitored by the Trainers/Assessors and forms part of “unsupervised hours”. Trainers will ask students questions related to their Individual Learning after each week’s class session to ensure and verify that students have gained the knowledge related to the quizzes.
Note: No classes on public holidays. If any class days fall on a public holiday, then the session will be allocated to another day in that week so that the amount of training supervised hours are consistent regardless of public holiday. Credit Transfer (CT), recognition of prior learning (RPL), professional experience and accreditation from a professional body can reduce the duration of your study by acknowledging your earlier, relevant experience. Credit and exemptions will be assessed consistent with the principles of the Menzies Institute of Technology.

Demonstration of Competence through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) 

Your existing skills, knowledge and experience can help you get a recognised qualification, through an assessment process called Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).  

The process could suit you if you have:

  • skills and knowledge gained on the job 
  • community work experience 
  • short course and work-based learning

  • other life experience. 

 

Evidence you might need to supply 

Your RPL assessor will discuss with you the most appropriate evidence you can provide to support your application, this may include:

  • observation at your workplace or a simulated workplace

Credit Transfers (CT)  

Credit Transfer is a process of recognising your previous formal studies that are equivalent to one or more units that form part of the qualification you are enrolling in. You will need to provide verified copies of Statements of Attainments or formal academic transcripts that list the units for which you are seeking Credit Transfer. We will confirm the equivalence and you will not need to repeat those units in your current study.
