HLT54115 Diploma of Nursing

This qualification reflects the role of an enrolled nurse working under supervision of a registered nurse. This qualification covers the application of skills and knowledge required to provide nursing care for people across the health sector. A lifespan approach should underpin this qualification with relevant competencies that relate to the different stages of life identified within the units.

Employment pathways: Although it does not guarantee an employment outcome, completion of this qualification could lead to employment in the health care industry as an enrolled nurse.


Further study pathways: This qualification may provide a pathway to further, but not limited to, tertiary level studies in nursing or into HLT64115 Advanced Diploma of Nursing

Licensing requirements: A graduate from a Diploma of Nursing program approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) is able to apply for registration with the NMBA as an enrolled nurse. Further information on registration is available at

Note that the scope of practice for enrolled nurses is determined by state and territory legislative requirements and the policies and procedures of the employing organisation. Users of this qualification must refer to those instruments in the development of training and assessment strategies.

Entry Requirements

No specific entry requirements as per the qualification details or training package.
Menzies has in place admission criteria for courses in its scope as required by its policy MITP11 Admissions Policy and Procedure as follows

– Minimum age of 18 years and above

– Have physical attributes suitable for placement in the nursing industry that encompasses manual handling of equipment and clients (i.e. to assist a client in transferring themselves to and from beds)

– Provide evidence of meeting the NMBA English language registration standard as specified in http://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au/Registration-Standards/English-language-skills.aspx

In summary, the evidence required is one of the following:
1) The learner will have completed 3.5 years (full time equivalent) of a combination of secondary, vocational and/or tertiary level studies taught and assessed in English in one of recognised countries (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America)  OR
2) The learner has achieved a valid English language test score from one of the following:

IELTS (Academic)Minimum overall score of 7 and a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking)
OETMinimum score of B in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking).
PTE AcademicMinimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking)
TOEFL iBTMinimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test: 24 for listening, 24 for reading, 27 for writing, and 23 for speaking.

Additionally, the learner is required to:
– Meet the LLN Assessment at Level 3
– Provide proof of up to date Immunisation.
– Provide a satisfactory National Police Clearance / Australian Federal Police Clearance Certificate (AFP) / NCC.
– Provide a Working with Children Check.

Course Duration

Learner’s with less than 12 months work experience

Total program duration is 95 weeks for delivery and assessment this includes a total of 14 weeks of holiday breaks. The total amount of training provided is 2388 hours. Following table provides a breakdown of the actual number of hours for training and assessment:

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Students may request recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment. If requested, students will be provided with an RPL document allowing them to provide verifiable details of prior learning. The evidence will be assessed for currency and against requirements of the units of competency, and an amended program strategy will be prepared, taking into account the student’s prior learning. Following are the steps of the Admissions and Enrolment Process for Domestic Students:
Step 1: Prospective learner previews information about course and the Institute.
▪    Information sources include but not limited to online, print, seminar/exhibition & marketing event.
Step 2: Prospective learner makes an enquiry to the Institute.
▪    Prospective learners may make the inquiry using online methods (website, Facebook, email), by phone or walk-in to the Institute.
Step 3: Discuss with Marketing and Admissions Staff about the training product.
Step 4: Complete the  Pre- Training Review (PTR)
▪    Provide all information and documentation as required. The prospective learner is required to complete Pre-Training Review Form
▪    Sit for the pre training interview to determine the suitability to the training product.
▪    Complete the Foundation Skills Assessment
Step 5: Submit Formal Application
▪    Prospective leaner completes the Domestic Student Application Form and sign Privacy Notice and Student Declaration – which is the formal application endorsement.
Step 6: Sign and accept the Letter of Offer and Student Agreement (LOO)
▪    This is the final stage for applicant to understand and agree to all terms and conditions of the LOO.
Step 7: Make Payment
▪    As outlined in the LOO, arrange the initial payment required to confirm enrolment.
Step 8: Receive Confirmation of Enrolment (COE)
▪    Domestic COE – Confirmation of Enrolment received by student. Also information on Orientation Day is included.
Step 9: Attend Orientation Session
▪    Compulsory session to receive all course and student orientation information, student registration, uniform sizing and student ID cards issuance.
